NOVA 003

One version of how the names Window Butte and Nova 003 came to be associated with Reid 013 is related here. This version is based primarily on personal communications, and therefore some details may be inaccurate.

A meteorite presumably weighing ~517 g was found in Western Australia in 1991. A bid was made to the source by R. Farrell to have the stone analyzed within a couple of weeks. He won the rights and was subsequently sent a 187 g specimen. For whatever reason (possibly because there was a prohibition on meteorites leaving the country of Australia without a permit), the name was changed to Window Butte, Utah and the analysis was conducted at AMNH, New York (Prinz). A short time thereafter, B. Reed learned of this situation and received the remainder of the stone (except research slices). Mr. Reed sent this material to the Center for Meteorite Studies, Arizona State University, for analysis (Lewis and Clark), while providing the actual coordinates and the name Reid 013 to reflect the proper location of the find. In the end, the Nomenclature Committee changed the name Window Butte to Nova 003, a number series used when there is uncertainty concerning the discovery location (notably, R. Farrell is also the owner of the meteorites Nova 001 and Nova 002). The Nomenclature Committee has indicated that a likelihood of pairing exists between Nova 003 and Reid 013.
